Project Timeframe: 2 Weeks

This music video was part of an introductory challenge for the M.Sc. TechArt & VFX course at Abertay and was aimed to get us to know each other and our strengths right at the start. The time window of 2 weeks was challenging as a group, that has never been working together, and everyone having their own imagination and skills to bring to it. The result was never meant to be a polished high-quality music video, but rather to see how far we get with the set limitation.

Production Team:

  • James  (Direction, Animation, UE Artist)

  • Timon  (Cinematography, Editing/ VFX)

  • Tanapat (Tech & Development)

  • Joseph (Environment & 3D Artist)

  • Aria (Conceptualisation, Model & Storyboard)

  • Ethan (3D Artist)

  • Sen (3D Artist)

  • Milagros (Enviroment & Props)

  • Jordan (Production & Storyboarding)

Workflow

The project pipeline was set up as a classic 3D Production Pipeline with Preproduction, Production, and Postproduction.

As my key role was Cinematographer, I was lucky to be participating throughout the whole project adjusting framing, look and feel, storyboards, etc. early on in the Project. Once we went over to the Production of the project, I helped in the virtual production space with the creation of footage with the group and took responsibility for creating all the outdoor shots in the graveyard. I also helped with adjusting some of the Mixamo animations (No time for custom animations unfortunately...) that we wanted to use, but problems in Unreal Engine concerning the Animation positioning left us with no option but to leave those ideas behind. (Also meant we had to compromise on the storytelling end of things.)

The time management of the project was a little bit too ambiguous and the editing felt short with less than 24h to spare. With this brief amount of time left the render quality of the 3D stuff unfortunately suffered quite a bit but the editing was finished on time with some better and some worse sections of the video.

Tasks

  • Cinematography to ensure a high qualitative visual standard of shots and a cohesive feel and storytelling of the video

  • Shooting footage in the virtual production studio as well as outdoors.

  • Prove of concept of VFX shots.

  • Adjusting Mixamo animations to fit the needs of the project

  • Editing and VFX shots in the post-production of the project (After Effect and Premiere Pro)

Problem Solving was a big part of this challenge and a lot of what we planned to achieve had to be reduced or scrapped from the video after things broke and couldn't be fixed in time.
